Waste Management Workshop

17th March 2022

A workshop on waste management was organised by the management of St. Teresa's Institute of Education on 17th March, 2022 for the students of FY.B.ED and SY.B.ED. The co- ordinator for this session was Dr. Giselle D'souza ma'am and the keynote speaker for the session was Dr. Aparna Pandey. The session began at 12:00 noon with an introduction to the topic by Dr. Giselle ma'am. Our SY.B.ED student, Ruchita D'cunha introduced our keynote speaker. Dr. Aparna Pandey shared her vision to create eco-consciousness among citizens for contributing to our planet by adopting good green practices. A total of 85 students attended the webinar in the multipurpose hall of the college. It was organised by the Student Council of St. Teresa's Institute of Education.

The objectives of this webinar were to sensitise and educate citizens on sustainable living, to reduce the landfill load, to maximise recycling, to encourage innovative design for sustainable solutions and to make bio-composting easy, attractive and affordable. Ma'am began the session by talking about what is waste, types of waste, waste statistics, endorsements, science of composting. Since waste causes harm to our environment and individuals don't have much idea how to dispose of it. Therefore, one can learn the benefits of low budget waste management, recycling at an individual level which are practised across the country. Ma'am explained to us about the process of waste segregation. There are three types of dustbins for garbage collection namely Yellow coloured bins for the disposal of papers and glass bottles, Blue coloured bins are meant to dispose of all plastic items and Green coloured bins are meant to dispose of wet and biodegradable wastes.

She demonstrated how the science of composting works and the bio-enzyme methods. Bio-enzyme cleaners are organic solutions produced by fermentation of fruits, vegetables, sugar, and water. These cleaners use the good bacteria to digest wastes, soils, stains and bad odours. An important message conveyed by Dr. Aparna is that waste management is an important issue that needs the government's immediate attention. The vote of thanks was given by FYB.ED student, Natasha Fernandes and the webinar ended with raising awareness about waste management among our students. At present there is very little awareness regarding this issue in our society. We, at STIE, practise effective waste management and hope to continue it further for the betterment of our environment from our homes and surrounding neighborhood.
