The College Feast Day-15th October, 2020 turned out to be a colourful day in the calendar of S.T.I.E. The Second Year student-teachers of St. Teresa’s Institute of Education, along with the faculty, participated in the ‘Sketchnoting’ workshop conducted by Ms. Kirtida Kale Swami, an alumnus of the Institution, currently serving at Crossroads International School, Udaipur in the post of PYP Coordinator.
The session was organized and anchored by Assoc. Prof. Dr. Giselle D’souza and hosted on Google Meet. It commenced with a beautiful and heartwarming prayer by Nicolette D'silva, commemorating the feast of our patroness, St Teresa of Avila. Thereafter, our General Secretary, Annabelle D'cruz, welcomed and introduced Ms. Kirtida Kale Swami to the audience following which the session took flight.
The concept of Sketchnoting was indeed novel to most of us. Kudos to Ms. Kirtida for explaining and demonstrating how this creative graphic technique could be incorporated in the teaching-learning process to add a fun dimension to Formative Assessment!
Through sites like Peardeck, she unraveled the features and essentials of Sketchnoting. We understood how this tool aids visual learning and can be used effectively to assess the creativity and ingenuity of students. The interactive approach that she used to drive home every concept clearly ensured a vibrant and lively session. She also shared some of the masterpieces designed by her second graders.
After orienting us to all the finer nuances of Sketchnoting, we along with Ma’am Kirtida engaged in an action packed hour of hands on experience, creating Sketchnotes on the theme of ‘Self Care’. Each of us poured in our ideas while Ma’am creatively transformed them into graphic form on the blank canvas with a dash of aesthetics, finesse and novelty. This exercise truly embodied that learning can also be fun. Over the next hour and a half, we truly enjoyed each and every moment of the session. As Ma'am Kirtida kept us amused and entertained with her jovial comments while preparing the Sketchnote, we too modeled it and designed our very own.
Finally, it was time for Lights-Camera-Action, as we captured screenshots of our works of art which would make memories for a lifetime. The session ended on a beautiful note with our dear Principal, Dr. Sr. Tanuja Waghmare addressing the virtual forum and enlightening us about the feast of St. Teresa of Avila. Sister expressed her gratitude to Ma'am Kirtida for the resourceful session. Thereafter, a formal vote of thanks was delivered by Neha Gharat on behalf of the S.T.I.E. family.
Indeed! “Art speaks where words are unable to explain. It is a hub for children to learn to trust their ideas, to explore and to transform their imagination to reality”.
